Floodlight League - The Roger Witt Trophy
This popular social competition runs between October and March with teams of 4 players each playing a set with their partners. Players are graded so you always play 3 sets against a similar standard player. This winter (20/21) due to covid-19 we have amended the format and due to the number of competitors you will play 15 matches which will in effect cover 2 full matches. See the revised Rules.
It takes place on Monday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. You will normally expect to play about every week and a half although it could be longer or shorter due to the fixtures.
There is a fee to cover the lights & new balls.
If you are interested in playing as a fill-in player, then please email us on firstname.lastname@example.org.
In its first year - winter 1992/3 - there we were 8 teams of 3, by invite - so 2 sets per player per match - and each team only played against the other teams once. The following year saw teams increased to 4 players, each getting 3 sets and playing teams twice - "home and away". There was a season of players getting 4 sets per match - playing 2 sets in the last round, however it was felt by the players to be too long an evening and also we tried to have 10 teams but this extended the season.
In 2000/01 a Cup competition was added to the end of the League season with an unseeded draw which gives all teams the chance to win or appear in the final.
As of today 71 different players have won the League, out of 111, with 223 competitors taking part, whilst the Cup has seen 54 different winning players, from 80 total winners.
To acknowledge the time and effort Roger Witt put into the Club from 1992-2013, during which time he was Secretary, including Membership Secretary for 7 of those years, the Floodlight League winners are now presented with "The Roger Witt Trophy"
